The 2nd ave subway line blows my mind… I read something really cool about one of the tunnel boring machines for I think it was for either the 7 train extension or the LIRR connection to Grand Central - they are burying it many stories below ground underneath park avenue and 38th street. So essentially, two blocks from my job. Apparently, it is far more expensive to turn the machine around and bring it back through the tunnel and out into Queens to recycle it, than it is to just bury it. I wonder what will happen in the future after we die off and our replacements have an archaeological dig in Manhattan and come across that monster…
